All about FLU – Questions and Answers

1. FLU? COLD? IS IT NOT THE SAME THING?

No, cold and flu are two different things. If you’ve ever experienced flu, you’ll know that it’s a lot more than having a bad cold. In most cases, flu can cause moderate illness. However, reports that Reach Pharmacy have read recently, suggest that flu is estimated to be responsible for more than 18,000 deaths each year in the UK.

2. SO, WHAT EXACTLY IS FLU?

Flu is a highly contagious respiratory infection. It spreads easily from person to person – at home, at school, at work, at the supermarket, on the train or bus. It gets passed on when someone who already has flu coughs or sneezes and is transmitted through the air by droplets.

3. HOW DOES A FLU VACCINE WORK?

A flu vaccine will stimulate the first wave of your body’s natural defences and create antibodies that will defend your body from the types of flu virus found in this year’s flu vaccine.

4. WHY SHOULD I GET A FLU VACCINATION?

Getting a flu vaccination is the best way to protect yourself from flu. And if you don’t have flu, you can’t spread it to those around you. This means you are indirectly helping to protect yourself and your family and friends too.

Also, the Reach Pharmacy team of pharmacists can help you and your family. Please phone us to make an appointment – 0141 294 0298 for Reach Pharmacy Argyle Street – open until 6pm and 0141 339 7039 if you stay near Hillhead or Woodlands in the West End. You can get more from www.reachpharmacy.com or www.dontforgetaboutflu.co.uk

5. WILL THE FLU VACCINATION PROTECT PEOPLE AGAINST SWINE FLU?

Yes, this year’s seasonal flu vaccine contains the H1N1 flu virus strain which causes swine flu.

6. THERE IS A SAYING THAT GETTING THE FLU VACCINATION WILL ACTUALLY GIVE YOU FLU. IS THIS TRUE?

No – this is a myth and there is no truth to it. A flu vaccination contains inactivated, killed virus strains so it can’t give you the flu. However, a flu vaccination can take up to 2 weeks to begin working so it is possible to catch flu in this short period of time. A flu vaccination is designed to protect you against the most common and potent strains of flu circulating. There is a small chance you could catch a strain of flu not contained in the flu vaccine or even just a cold virus circulating in the community. This is why we at Reach Pharmacy are doing as much as we can to help give as much information as possible to everyone.

7. I KNOW THERE ARE CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES THAT PREVENT A PHARMACY FROM GIVING THE FLU VACCINATION. CAN YOU SAY WHAT THESE ARE?

Yes, of course. You should be able to confirm the following if you are to ensure that you can receive the vaccine:

You are 18 years of age or over (unless you have a serious condition such as asthma or diabetes)

You have not had a seasonal flu vaccination within the past 6 months

Also, you should discuss your suitability with the pharmacy assistant if any of the following apply to you:

You have any significant infection at present, for example, a chest infection

You have had any other immunisations or vaccinations during the past 3 months; you should be fine if you received the meningitis vaccine for Hajj

You have ever fainted or felt dizzy after receiving an injection in the past

You are allergic to anything

You are taking any medication

You are suffering from any medical conditions

8. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR PEOPLE FOLLOWING THEIR VACCINATION?

After you have had your vaccination:

Apply a cold flannel if you have a sore arm

Drink plenty of water if you have a headache or slight fever, or take painkillers if required

If your symptoms persist over 48 hours, please contact your surgery as soon as possible
